Ootoya hails from Japan, with outlets in Thailand, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore. The restaurant is also arguably one of the most popular eateries in the quiet Orchard Central Shopping Mall.

Interestingly, Ootoya does not serve any sushi, sashimi or ramen which are the popular Japanese fare over here. The small and cozy eatery serves Japanese set meals – and perhaps a true blue Japanese dining experience.

The open-concept dining area is not big, but feels somewhat zen with its simple layout, tatami and ikebana at the centre.

I ordered scallop rice set (S$18.90). My scallop rice was a simple dish – with flavorful rice sprinkled with sesame seeds and shreds of seaweed, as well as 3 pieces of well -cooked scallops.

As I took a sip of my tofu and chicken soup, I almost imagined myself at a random restaurant in Japan.

Japanese-styled grilled hamburger set with mushrooms(S$17.90).

Verdict:

Ootoya  gave me a warm and fuzzy feeling – this could be due to the long, cold walk that I took around Orchard Central just to find the restaurant. Or perhaps, it was the unpretentious presentation of the meals that won me over.
