Since Chinese New Year is approaching, I have been on the lookout for a new cheongsam dress again. I might be late for the tailor but I reckoned that I might as well look around the web to seek inspirations for a newer and more refreshing design.

Here are some designs that I really like.. tell me what you think!

1. Asymmetrical hem

The asymmetrical skirt or fishtail skirt trend is huge. Why not implement it on a cheongsam dress? The dress above worn by Chinese actress Yao Di, looks breezy and bohemian. I also like how the collars have been rejuvenated to appear vaguely inspired by Mandarin collars, but more comfortable for the wearer.

2. Puffed sleeves

If you are concerned about flabby arms, perhaps you could look for a cheongsam dress with puffed sleeves, as seen on Ayumi Hamasaki.

3. Wear it as a short dress

You can easily find such short cheongsam dresses on eBay, Taobao, online stores, or even Chinatown. Add some modern elements to your outfit – such as leggings and leather clutch, as well as some fierce accessories. I love how Kate Moss looked edgy rather than traditional in this monochrome cheongsam dress.

4. Power shoulders and Obi belt

I feel like slapping myself for only seeing this collection now. Tibi’s Spring Summer 2009 collection had much Mandarin influence and the dresses above are calling my name! To modernise the cheongsam, we could opt for a wee power shoulders. I also liked the inclusion of Obi belt into the dress, the fusion of different Asian traditional elements do create some unlikely sparks, don’t you think?

Anyone knows where I can get my hands on this old collection?

5. Flutter sleeves

If you want your cheongsam dress to look more romantic, perhaps flutter sleeves would be a great addition, as seen on Gong Li and Shu Qi.

Before I end off this post, here’s Emma Watson in a long white cheongsam circa 2004. How cute!
