What do you use to remove your makeup? For a long while I was using Kiehl’s Supremely Gentle Eye Makeup Remover. When my supply was exhausted, I started using the gentle cleansing oil from Shu Uemura. Recently, I was introduced to Bioderma Micelle Solution, which is essentially a makeup remover cum cleansing water.

OIL – Shu Uemura Fresh Pore Clarifying Gentle Cleansing Oil (S$62 for 150 ml)

I have oily skin and I have learned that I should avoid oil-based facial products. Nonetheless, I was also told that cleansing oil is able to dissolve makeup better and as long as you wash off the product with water, and double cleanse with another suitable cleanser, it can be beneficial to oily skin.

This cleansing oil is actually not as greasy as some other oil-based makeup removers I have tried. It falls within my threshold for “oiliness”. When I was using this product, I would remove my makeup with the oil and follow up by washing my face with water before using my foaming cleanser. The cleansing oil is indeed an efficient remover which melts off my makeup in a jiffy.

LOTION – Kiehl’s Supremely Gentle Eye Makeup Remover (S$35 for 125 ml)

While the product name suggests that it should be used to remove your eye makeup, I have used it to remove my entire makeup, including foundation and lipstick. All I did was pour some of the lotion on my cotton pad and start wiping. Most of my makeup were removed in a swipe, except for my stubborn eye liner and mascara.

What I really like about this Kiehl’s product is its gentle, non-oily texture. After a substantial swipe, the face feels clean and non-oily – to the extent that I wouldn’t feel an urgent need to wash my face immediately, as compared to the occasions when I was using a cleansing oil.

This is great for those who are not a fan of oil-based products.

WATER – Bioderma Sensibio H20 Micelle Solution (S$15.90 for 100ml, S$34.50 for 250ml)

The solution is transparent, and looks almost like plain water. But it does remove makeup very well. The solution is able to do a duo role of both removing makeup and cleansing the skin. It is subtle, non-irritating for sensitive skin, yet efficient in removing dirt and impurities from your face. It takes a bit more effort to remove my stubborn eye liner – more swipes – otherwise the miracle water is totally a breeze.

Note: This product is available at Guardian Centrepoint, IMM, Jurong Point, Paragon, Parkway, Nex, Vivo and Holland Road Shopping Centre.

Verdict:

In terms of price, texture and efficiency, my preference goes to the Bioderma Sensibio H20 Micelle Solution. Of course, I would still like to highlight that the Shu Uemura and Kiehl’s products were quality products too, but my preference is tended towards Bioderma’s ultra light and non-invasive texture. The Micelle Solution is perfect for sensitive skin, so far I have not observed any new bump or clogged pores from using this cleanser.
