I have never really paid much attention to the whole idea of “cleansing balm“, until I encountered the brand Eve Lom. Touted by Vogue as “probably the best cleanser in the world”, the Eve Lom cleanser is an iconic product that has won many raves from beauty insiders.

First of all, what is a “cleansing balm”?  Some say that it is cleansing oil in solid form. To explain it better, the balm feels like a thicker cream with a waxy texture. Infused with useful oils which not only help dissolve your makeup and remove grime without stripping moisture, the cleansing balm could also nourish your skin. This is probably a good option for those who believe in using cleansing oil to remove makeup, but do not fancy the feeling of lathering an oily liquid on the skin.

Eve Lom Cleanser Review

So, back to the cult product in question. Here is a video on Eve Lom’s cleansing method.

Having tried the cleanser for almost a week now using the same method, I am amazed by the efficiency of the balm as it is able to dissolve most of my stubborn makeup! Containing a “powerful blend of Egyptian chamomile, hops, clove, and eucalyptus oil together with cocoa butter”, the tiny granules in the balm helps to decongest and exfoliate gently. The skin does look more rejuvenated and radiant, without feeling taut or dry after cleansing.

However, one thing that you would need to get use to is its medicinal scent, which reminds me of Zam-Buk. In addition, the cleanser DOES contain mineral oil, alcohol and paraben. I also find the muslin cloth a bit too pricey at $30 for 3 pieces, although these come free for those who purchase the larger size product. I believe a thin muslin cloth from the regular supermarket would be able to serve the same purpose and effect.

Nonetheless, this cleanser is indeed a shortcut as I could skip the arduous double cleansing approach. Considering the price paid for a cleansing oil (or other makeup removers) and a mid-range cleanser, I would prefer to purchase Eve Lom’s product because it works well for me, and I love to see my skin radiant and rosy after cleansing.

Price: $90 (50ml), $120 (100ml) and $185 (200ml) at Escentials.

Other alternatives: REN No.1 Purity Cleansing Balm and Clinique Take the Day Off Cleansing Balm

For those who are particular about mineral oil, alcohol and paraben ingredients, you could consider REN’s No. 1 Purity Cleansing Balm instead. Infused with rose oil and rosehip seed oil, as well as chamomile and violet leaf extracts, the product claims to be able to calm redness and reduce inflammation. It is priced at S$85 for 150ml, available at Escentials. Another more affordable alternative would be Clinique’s Take The Day Off Cleansing Balm, which costs S$52 for 125ml at most Clinique counters.

Have you used any other cleansing balm before? Any thoughts?
