Let me tell you a secret. Sometimes, in the midst of some emotional ups-and-downs at the workplace, or in a bid to fight drowsiness, I would rely on a simple cup of Green Tea (Matcha).
Matcha contains caffeine, so it could keep you alert. But its caffeine content is different from coffee. Caffeine in coffee impacts on the adrenal glands and causes spikes in adrenaline glucose and insulin levels, causing nervousness, sleeplessness and hunger pangs. On the other hand, caffeine in matcha forms bonds with nutrients to enter the bloodstream in a time-release fashion, leading to a steady level energy over 3-6 hours.
Based on the above, I would imagine an eatery dedicated to Matcha to be a happy place – and the name “Nana’s Green Tea” sounds irresistibly cute!
Matcha Latte (S$7)
You could opt for the fancy Matcha Float (with a scoop of Matcha ice-cream, obviously) or Matcha with Azuki White Pearl drink, or go hardcore with just the simple Matcha Green Tea like Dottie. I was promptly brought back to the Chado lessons that I took when I was in college – the ceremonial preparation and presentation of matcha, which highlights the importance of zen, focus and harmony.
Matcha Gateaux Choc Parfait (S$13.80)
Another thing I would never miss out on are the desserts! There were quite an array to choose from but unfortunately only space for one. The Parfait that we chose (pictured above) was a sumptuous treat of kanten jelly, soft serve, cornflakes, cake, red bean (azuki) and green tea ice-cream. No one should decline Japanese desserts – while the Chado theory of “Wabi-Sabi” doesn’t hold true in this department – the elaborate arrangement of different ingredients worked well together as a sweet ending to a satisfying meal.
Of course, in case you were wondering, the cafe serves main courses too. The Salmon Carpaccio, Ebi Goma Dare Udon and Prawn Broccoli Salad are recommended items.
