There are gels, creams and balms. But have you tried these water-activated facial cleansing powders?

I have no idea the advantages of powder-based facial cleanser over the others – a check on Google yielded very little information along this line – but from a packaging perspective, powder based products weigh lighter than the usual cleansing gels and creams.

Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant (75g for US$52)

This is a highly raved exfoliating product that is made up of gentle, rice-based powder that activates upon contact with water, releasing Papain, Salicylic Acid and Rice Enzymes.

Simply pour a bit of powder on your wet palms and rub together to form a creamy paste before massaging the mixture on your face. You would experience tiny granules on your skin when scrubbing your face.

Whilst Dermologica mentioned that this is gentle enough to be used daily, I only use it once or twice a week as my skin is sensitive. The product does leave your skin softer and more radiant, and I appreciate that salicylic acid helps to calm acne or prevent breakouts. Whilst the price appears steep, just a little powder is required per scrub and therefore one bottle of the product could last for a long time.

Fancl Facial Washing Powder (50g for S$28)

The Fancl Facial Washing Powder is also well-reputed, but it is a pure cleansing product rather than an exfoliant. The powder, when interacts with water, forms a smooth cleansing foam that is leaves the skin very clean and hydrated, without stripping any moisture.

Another innovative way to create a foamy mixture is to pour the powder into the blue puff ball, add water and squeeze the ball. It’s amazing how much foam could be amassed in a jiffy!

I appreciate that this product is free of fragrance, preservatives and mineral oil, and I could also use the Clarisonic brush with the cleansing foam. This is another affordable cleansing option. Do note that the product should be used within 3 months once it is opened, due to its “Mutenka” preservative-free formula.
