A while back, I received a surprise package from Sephora.

Yes! A box full of eyeliners from different brands. That kick-started my aim to test drive 1 new eyeliner per day and document my experience in this “Eyeliner Diaries“.

A little background on my eyeliner preference. I have oily eyelids and my eye makeup tend to smudge after a long day. As a result, I usually avoid kohl or eyeliner pencils and tend to reach out for liquid eyeliners. I also prefer eyeliner pens with felt tips because they seem easier to control. A little tip for girls with oilier skin, you could consider dabbing a little bit of eye makeup primer – I use NARS Smudge Proof Eye Shadow Base – before you apply the eyeliner.

Day 1: Sephora Smart Liner

The first one that I tried on is this eye liner with an ergonomic design. Apparently, this design makes it foolproof to draw a high-precision line.

It was uh-ok. I didn’t find the handle that ergonomic but I felt the line was intense and thick. Although the felt tip sturdy, it is not able to produce super sharp line those Japanese eyeliners are capable of doing. My eye makeup lasted for the entire work day without much smudging – probably thanks to the eye shadow primer.

Verdict: Not bad, but not the best.

Day 2: Benefit They’re Real! Push-Up Liner

This is a new release this year and I have been curious about it. After all, they call it the “lash-hugging” eyeliner pen and 86% of the users surveyed said that this product hugged the lash line (according to the packaging).

This Push-Up Liner has an “Accuflex tip” that is “custom soft, angled tip” and the twist-and-turn mechanism helps to dispense the gel liner out of the tip.

In terms of design, this is indeed a revolutionary product as I have never seen something similar. Whilst the line indeed hugs the lash, I had immense difficulty drawing a smooth straight line because the gel flakes and dries up very quickly. I ended up having to draw an area over and over again, much to the annoyance of my lashes and obviously, my eyeliner looked a bit disrupted and choppy.

Verdict: I don’t think I will use this again. Too much hype but little on delivery, in my humble opinion. The eyeliner also smudged a little at the end of the day.

Day 3: Tarte Skinny Smoldereyes

I received this eyeliner pencil in “moonstone brown”, which is a matte dark brown colour great for a more subtle look.

The product glided on very smoothly on my lids and you could use the smudge tip to create a smoldering smokey eye. The line drawn is thicker, but that was not an issue for me as the brown shade is subtle and neutral.

I was ready to fall in love with this product except that it was not very long-lasting. By mid-day, part of my eyeliner smudged. This is the reason why I go to a liquid eyeliner pen time and again.

Verdict: Love it but unfortunately my oily eyelids and NARS primer can’t hold the product very well.

Day 4: Sephora Contour Eye Pencil in 35 Romantic Comedy + Marc Jacobs “Magic Marc’er” Precision Pen Eyeliner

It was the weekend, so I decided to go a bit bolder with 2 eyeliners. I started off with the Sephora Contour Eye Pencil in Hot Pink (they gave it a poetic name “Romantic Comedy”) and then lined the Marc Jacobs “Magic Marc’er” (I love this pun as well!) near the lash line.

The Sephora Contour Eye Pencil worked pretty well as a coloured eyeliner – although I would be reluctant to use the black version because it would likely to be a bit smudgy and less defined. The Magic Marc’er, on the other hand, was a pleasant surprise! The felt tip was very sturdy and sharp, and the product was able to produce precise, defined line. The colour was deep black, similar to Sephora Smart Liner, but I felt more in control with the thickness of the line here.

Both products were quite long-lasting.

Verdict: I love the hot pink color of Sephora Contour Eye Pencil – it’s a good break from the usual turqoise shade that was in the rage a while back! Marc Jacobs Precision Pen Eye Liner was a pleasant surprise and my favourite black eyeliner from these 4 days of testing thus far.

This Eyeliner Diaries will be continued with Part 2. There are still a number of products that I will be test-driving – such as the Lancôme Artliner Eyeliner, Dior Addict IT-Line and Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner! Stay tuned!
