Things to do in London: Hermès Leather Forever Exhibition and Christian Louboutin Retrospective

I have a number of friends who are based in London, currently holidaying in London, or intend to do so within these couple of months. This is a special shout-out for them, as well as for you if you are headed to the city soon. Don’t miss out on these two limited-time-only exhibitions!

1. Hermès Leather Forever Exhibition

Luxury French fashion house Hermès marks its 175th anniversary with this Leather Forever exhibition. Founded by Thierry Hermès in Paris in 1837, as a house of master harness-making and later saddle-making, this exhibition takes the visitor on a poetic journey exploring Hermès’ love of this fine material, presenting items from Hermès’ past, such as those commissioned by the Duke of Windsor for his Duchess as well as some of its latest creations.

Hermès is renowned for its iconic handmade leather handbags such as the Kelly and the Birkin, the accessory of choice for a host of celebrities, from the late Grace Kelly and Lady Gaga to Marc Jacobs and Victoria Beckham. At this exhibition, you will be able to witness craftspeople from the Hermès workshops in Paris demonstrating the art of leather working by creating some of its iconic bags in situ.

LOCATION: 6 Burlington Gardens, London W1.
DATE: 8th May – 27th May, 20128th May – 27th May, 2012
HOURS: The exhibition is open Monday to Sunday 10 am until 6 pm and on Fridays until 10pm.

2. Christian Louboutin Retrospective

This exhibition showcases Christian Louboutin’s twenty years of designs and inspiration, revealing the artistry and theatricality of his shoe design from stilettos to lace-up boots, studded sneakers and bejewelled pumps.

Drawing from Christian Louboutin’s personal archive, the exhibition presents his celebrated shoe designs, referencing the origins of the iconic red sole, through to the latest Louboutin collections including a range for men and desirable handbags.

DATE: 1st May – 9th July, 2012

Printed Skinny Jeans

I was too early for an event at Marina Bay Sands one Friday evening and decided to troop towards Gong Cha for some comfort drink. From afar, I saw two young men smiling and waving at me.

I have zoomed in for a close-up of the quirky prints on the jeans. I am loving the printed jeans trend at the moment. You can look stylish with minimal effort yet feel comfortable and relaxed at the same time.

H&M Autumn 2012 Collection Preview

That was how the Marketing Manager of H&M Singapore, Lisa, described the brand’s upcoming autumn collection.

Expect sleek minimalist pieces, but also apparel and accessories that swing to the other extreme – embellishments, prints and studs.

Key accessories are essential for your autumn palette if your autumn wear are mostly safe and wearable options.

The statement bib necklace is surprisingly light-weight. I didn’t have a neckache.

An embellished shoulder piece that transforms your plain top in a jiffy.

Lisa is ready to party in her sequinned dress – also from the Autumn 2012 collection.

I love loafers. Especially silver ones.

Beauty Concierge at the revamped DFS Galleria Beauty Hall

I am sure many of you have heard of the newly revamped Beauty Hall at DFS Galleria on Scotts Road. And yes, the “talk of the town” is that Giorgio Armani Beauty has landed in Singapore and is now available exclusively at DFS Galleria.

But what I want to share with all of you today, is a new complimentary service offered by DFS Galleria, known as the Beauty Concierge. This was where I had my La Mer facial a few days ago – and you can enjoy this little treat too.

I checked in to the concierge that is nestled at a corner of the spacious Beauty Hall and was introduced to my beauty advisor, Eileen.

I was led to the spacious beauty consultation room, where I could have a detailed skin analysis, facial treatment and makeup services such as quick touch up and brow shaping.

The makeover corner – this area is quite private, so the makeup advisors can provide unbiased recommendations on brands and shades according to your skin types.

The high-tech machine loaded with the VISIA imaging technology, which was able to provide detailed analysis about my face – such as wrinkles, pores, pigmentation etc.

Eileen ran the scanner, which captured a sharp photo of my face. The programme graded my skin on various aspects, which would allow Eileen to suggest a suitable treatment for me. During the process, Eileen also enquired on my usual skincare regime, products I have been using, as well as my skincare concern.

Based on our conversation and the skin analysis, Eileen suggested to use La Mer products for my facial treatment. I am currently using the Moisture Gel every night and she felt that I could continue or increase my frequency of application to twice daily. This treatment is a good opportunity for patrons to try on different brands (if suitable for your skin types), or a new product from your favourite brand, and also learn tips on how to apply the products.

And voilà, a relaxed facial that uses products I like and trust!

Browgraphy at Browhaus -You can leave your eyebrow pencil aside for 2 weeks!

I have gone for brow threading for x years with Browhaus and I am deeply ashamed that I had never knew about the Browgraphy treatment – which basically gives you make-up ready brows that last for 2 weeks.

I was invited to try the Browgraphy treatment at the newly renovated Browhaus Paragon – which is now decorated with colourful teepees and log furnishing.

The Browgraphy treatment (S$42) combines eyebrow threading and tweezing, as well as a service known as Colour Tweak – which dye your brows to a desired shade. The shape and colour last for about 2 weeks, i.e. you do not have to draw your eyebrows every morning for the next 14 days.

Here are the steps:

As my brows were sparse and light, the Brow Architect started off with threading, followed by tweezing to achieve a neat brow shape.
After that, she applied a soothing ampoule call Peace to my brow area. This is a serum which contains Larrea Divaricata, a leaf extract that is anti-inflammatory, moisturizing and inhibits growth of the hair follicles.
The Brow Architect then applied a vegetable-based dye on my brow to match with the colour of my hair and complexion. Plant dye are 100% safe and suitable to apply at our eye area.
The whole process took about 30 minutes. Easy peasy!

Verdict:

My brows still looked a bit light. I opted for dark brown instead of black dye for fear of having stark looking brows. In retrospect, I should have requested to darken my brows a bit further.

Other than the abovementioned, I am generally quite pleased with the outcome. I have not spotted much fine hair for 2 weeks thus far, thanks to the powerful Peace serum. At S$42, I would definitely be keen to try this service regularly to maintain my brow shape and colour!

I have been interested in Browhaus’ Brow Resurrection – a semi-permanent brow enhancement solution – for several years but have been constantly put off by the S$1200 price tag. For those who are like me, perhaps Browgraphy is a temporary dip in the water at a lower cost, before you decide to take the plunge.

本人的眉毛非常稀疏，每天都得画好眉毛才能出门。之前应本地Browhaus 的邀请，尝试他们家的Browgraphy服务。此服务不仅替您修好眉型，也将它染色，以配合您的发色以及肤色。由于加上独家调制的Peace 精华露，眉毛在一至两个礼拜内不会滋长。因此，美美的眉型以及颜色能维持将近两个礼拜，在这段时间您无需为画眉毛而烦恼。本人觉得除了我的眉色可以再加深一些，其他方面都令人满意，借此推荐这项服务给大家。

At my age, I have attended a good number of wedding parties in Singapore and sadly most of the time, the bridal looks are rather uninspiring. Flora by Gucci – What’s your Flora?

Most of you probably know how much of a fan I am with profiling tools. Having gone through a fragrance profiling session last year, I got a wee bit excited when P&G Beauty did a simple profiling for me with the latest Floral by Gucci fragrances.

The series consists of 5 fragrances, all inspired by different flowers. Gucci describes the Floral Garden woman as “youthful, enigmatic, beguiling – contemporary but with a sensitive appreciation of the past”. Each Floral Garden perfume embodies a different facet the woman.

Without further ado, here is my fragrance profile by Mimi Kumar, Senior Scientist of P&G Beauty. The profile was based on my responses to 4 multiple choice questions.

I noticed how a few “profilers” have used the word “elegant” on me. Is it the imagery I have created on MsGlitzy.com? I’m the clumsiest person around in real life!

So which Floral Garden woman are you?

The Gorgeous Gardenia woman exudes a sultry sensuality that is lushly enticing. Men are drawn to her as bees are to a blossoming flower.
The Gracious Tuberose woman boasts a natural poise. She dances through life with a ballerina’s elegance and her presence is a joy for those around her.
The Glamorous Magnolia woman is spellbinding in her allure. Confident, charismatic, she draws her audience with a caressing touch.
The Generous Violet woman is consummately feminine. Mysterious, romantic, impeccably sophisticate, she envelops all around her in her bounteous aura.
The Glorious Mandarin woman is inspiring and intoxicating. Time in her company is enlivening. Her spirited approach to life is utterly thrilling.

Having tried on the Gorgeous Gardenia, Gracious Tuberose and Glamorous Magnolia – all 3 are widely available at all Gucci fragrances counters here – this series of floral fragrances looks set to be well-liked by most women, given its light, refreshing scent. I am inclined towards Glamorous Magnolia, as accurately highlighted in my profile, for its soft, understated and sensual fragrance. Gorgeous Gardenia is sweeter and more exuberant while Gracious Tuberose, also a personal favourite, has a little more zest and spice.

The Gucci Floral Gorgeous Gardenia, Gracious Tuberose and Glamorous Magnolia EDT are available in 30ml (S$93), 50ml (S$113) and 100ml (S$168). The Generous Violet and Glorious Mandarin are available in 100ml (S$168) and are exclusive to Gucci boutiques only.

Sexy Swimwear for Summer!

With the sweltering heat comes a reminder that Summer is finally approaching. Has anyone booked your beach vacay?

Here are some recommendations for your new swim outfit that allows you to flaunt your sexy bod.

H&M 2-piece swim suit (Top: S$24.90, Bottom: S$17.90)

Forget about tan lines. The netted detail at the front of the bandeau bikini, together with the rustic tie dye print, exude tribal appeal in this very hot summer.

ASOS Metallic Asymmetric Cut Out Suit (S$77.01)

Go futuristic with a metallic swimsuit! This monokini looks sexy with its deep v-neckline and wrap style with metal ring at the hip, but seems very snug and wearable too. Definitely a piece that is both practical and seductive.

Aimer Pure Collection – Black Side Lace One-piece (S$249.90)

Aimer, a lingerie and swimwear brand that hauls from China, has entered Singapore, with retail outlets at Marina Bay Sands, Vivocity, Jurong Point and Takashimaya. The one-piece swimsuit above boasts a deep v-neckline, with delicate lace side panels that create a sensual peekaboo effect.

Victoria’s Secret Very Sexy Leopard Print Wrap Monokini (US$69)

This is evidently a swimsuit with very minimal coverage. Perhaps not suitable to wear for a swim, but definitely a great piece to frolic under the sun at the pool of your posh beach villa.

Agent Provocateur Mazzy Cutout Swimsuit (US$450)

This monokini from Agent Provocateur incorporated a number of current Spring/Summer trends with its graphic style and popping colours. It looks both sporty (another SS2012 trend) and sexy with its intriguing cut-out patterns.

Power Masks – La Prairie Swiss Cellular White Intensive Illuminating Mask & Fancl Beauty Facial Treatment Mask

Since I returned from my holiday last month, my rejuvenated skin slowly degenerated having resumed the hustle and bustle of life. Stress bumps started emerging, the skin tone began to look dull and not to mention my eye bags! Other than being diligent on my daily skin care regime, I was also looking at “Power Masks“, which usually contain a concentrated amount of ingredients good enough to give your skin a decent recharge after a whole week of mayhem.

La Prairie Swiss Cellular White Intensive Illuminating Masks (6 sets of upper and lower masks, S$318)

This is a luxurious set of masks that not only brightens your skin tone, but also hydrates, soothes and energizes. Essentially, other than whitening ingredients, this mask is packed with other moisturising and revitalising nutrients.

Each set of masks is separated to two parts – one for the upper part of the face and the other for the lower portion. Apply the lower mask first and then make sure that the upper mask overlaps with the other. Leave the mask on for about 10 minutes, remember to massage the excess white essence to your neck – don’t waste the good stuff!

I tried on this mask only once. The results after 10 minutes? Other than instant radiance, some of the tiny stress bumps on my face had soothed or disappeared. In addition, my skin felt very smooth and looked plump and supple.

Definitely a power mask, although the price tag (S$318 for a set of 6) is on the steeper side.

My verdict: Splurge to give your complexion an instant boost before a really important event or occasion.

Fancl Beauty Facial Treatment Mask (Vitalizing) (6 tubes, S$58)

Fancl’s Beauty Facial Treatment Mask comes in a tube, which consists of cute yellow specks of Vitamin E capsules, Royal Jelly Essence, European Pear Extract and Bifida Bacteria Extract. Each box contains 6 tubes, and this mask aims to target dullness of complexion and rejuvenate your skin’s metabolism.

After cleansing, squeeze all the content in the tube on your clean palm and start massaging them to your dry face. Leave the mask on for about 3 minutes (I typically leave them on for 5-7 minutes), and rinse thoroughly after that.

As seen on the above picture, each tube contains a huge amount of content, which has proven too much for my huge face. Once again, I massaged the excess on your neck.

The aftermath? The skin looked supple and radiant, and due to some gentle exfoliation during the massaging of content, it felt smooth too. Having known of Fancl’s “Mutenka” belief (additive-free), most of their ingredients are suitable for sensitive skin although the shelf life is shorter due to the lack of strong preservatives.

My verdict: While the impact was not as mind-blowing as La Prairie’s mask, Fancl’s Beauty Facial Treatment provided sufficient recharge that lasted for a few days. Given its low price (S$58 for a box of 6 tubes), I would consider getting this for regular use.

自从放假回国之后，便马不停蹄地开始回到平时繁忙的步伐，休假后富有光泽的好皮肤也开始展现疲态。除了脸上出现一些小斑斑之外，肌肤开始看起来暗沉。所以，平日我都非常勤奋抹保养品，周末时便选用一些能够补充光泽以及水分的面膜。这次介绍大家来自瑞士La Prairie的细胞美白深层面膜，一份面膜除了能够使肌肤明亮，还能够补充水份，使它更加光滑。虽然价格偏高，但是效果令人赞叹，绝对值得一试。若想要价位较合理的面膜，可考虑来自日本 Fancl滋养修护的亮滑精华软膜。通过維他命E微粒能够软化肌肤，去除角质，有效值改善暗粒等肌肤粗糙得问题。
