Information of AFF 2014 is finally out. The event will be back at Tent@Orchard this year, from 14-18 May.

The event will open on 14 May with Prabal Gurung Fall/Winter showcase and closing show on 18 May will be hosted by fashion royalty, Oscar de la Renta Fall Winter collection.  SK-II is the official skincare partner for AFF (does that mean all models will use SK-II products to prep their skin before makeup?) and therefore brand ambassadors Godfrey Gao and Kate Bosworth will be making an appearance at the shows!

Do you recall the previous “Tiers of Joy” collection designed by hansel that was inspired by the Nonya kueh? It was truly amazing how our local everyday food could be transformed into wearable prints.

Well, Jo Soh from hansel did it again this time round by integrating another local everyday sight into her latest fashion collection. And that source inspiration is none other than our HDB flats (i.e. Singapore’s public housing).

Remember my really colourful dress from Jessica Simpson which I associated with the local “kueh lapis sagu” or “gao teng kueh” (nine layered cake)?

Singaporean designer Jo Soh of hansel has recently launched a new collection that takes the cue (literally and figuratively) from this kueh kueh and it’s amazing how slices and slices of these kueh could actually make great pattern on dresses.

See what I mean?

Looked unintentionally as if I was headed back to school yesterday.

Dress: hansel | Satchel: Furla | Sneakers: Camper

I got the shirt dress from hansel at a sale a while ago and it was heavily discounted! Only S$41, if I remember correctly, and certainly a mere fraction of the original price which typically ranged from S$200 to 300 for a dress. I love real sales like these!

The 4th level of Tangs Orchard has been transformed to a local fashion haven for a week. Collections from local designers such as Chalk, Yumumu, Own Muse, Peter Kor and Hansel are available at Style Space on 4 (the fourth level of the departmental store) from now till 22nd May 2011. On Friday, there was a short fashion show to showcase designs from these local labels.

I was not able to attend the hansel opening party at Mandarin Gallery and the pictures really spoke louder than words.

I THINK I MISSED A PRETTY AWESOME PARTY!

To be frank, I am hardly familiar with local fashion because I usually buy my clothes online, or from UK/US brands. Admittedly, with all the convenience of online shopping, I get too lazy to scout for new brands or check out local designs and their stores.

In the recent years, the paradigm has changed and there are more and more opportunities and platforms for local designers. An increasing number of designers are getting recognised and their styles have evolved to become more varied and exciting. So, if you are like me who have been too lazy to shop new stores, it’s time to pay attention to these designers and their offerings!

Hansel, the brain child of local designer Jo Soh, opened their first dedicated store at Stamford House and I had a chance to check it out with Dottie.

There was a time-line exhibit with Jo’s designs over the years and her drawings.

As you can tell, the designs over the years have evolved, but the quirky element has been pretty consistent. I love the printed blazer (ok, me and printed blazer again) from “Criss Cross Boy Loves Plain Jane” series.

Located at Stamford House, I think everyone should pop by to just take a look at her works. The fashion time-line is such a cute idea that it almost felt like going to an exhibition!  In fact, I spent most of my time staring at the clothes on the wall and reading the pictures and cute text.

In terms of clothes size, most of the pieces are size 0, 1 and 2. Size 2 is almost equivalent to US 8 and UK 10. Price range is  at about $229 – 299 for a dress and above $100 for a top.

Guests were given a Retro Spec cut-out. Here’s our interpretation on how to wear the Retro Specs.
