In the name of “research” for my burgeoning shopping list in Europe, I checked out Zara website and spotted a Chinese face for the August lookbook. Liu Wen, a fashion model who hails from Hunan province of China, looked impeccable in the feminine body hugging pieces, as well as the more androgynous apparels.

An elegant two-piece ensemble with delicate beaded details.

I have bought this Karen Millen lace trench dress for quite a while but haven’t really worn it often because in all honesty, I sometimes think trench coats are meant to be trench coats. It is irritating and potentially embarrassing when the bottom button snaps open as you sit down. But it’s hard not to love the intricate lace patterns in an unconventional earthy shade.

For the month of November, Zara’s lookbook appeared distinctly different from previous months, the highlight were the soft prints and textures, deviating away from the bright colours and colourblock trends that were constantly showcased throughout the year.

What I took away from this lookbook is there is no rule in styling. I am sure most of us have similar pieces at home, but have never thought of putting them together in this manner.

1. Play with textures

Leather+Denim+Lace: The unlikely combination of casual and formal, hard and soft (I meant the fabric), feminine and rock chic. Defiant and individualistic.

The weather in NYC has been erratic. On some days, it gets real warm and sunny that you could easily get a tan by spending a day outside. On other days, it gets so rainy that you almost can’t do much in the city.

Determined not to let the rain wear me down, I am seriously considering getting a pair of rain boots for wet days here.
